Ft. Lewis or BUST!

The purpose of this blog is mainly to squash rumors....
You may have heard that we are moving to Ft. Lewis soon.
Maybe yes, maybe no. Here's the story:

I was visiting my friend Maggie at her house one night, talking about Army crap, when her husband came in and overheard me talking about wanting to live at Ft. Lewis. He asked me if Matt had re-enlisted yet, and I told him he had not. He then informed me that for your first re-enlistment, the Army will let you PICK your next duty station if you re-enlist. I didn't know that!! So I called Matt on my way home (he was on 24hr duty) and told him what Andres told me. He said, "I know". I said, "Well I didn't!"

So, the plan was for Matt to re-enlist in the Army, pick Ft. Lewis as his next duty station, and still continue to pursue the Warrant Officer program.
So we went in, and talked to Retention to see what they had to say.
The let us know that we COULD choose Ft. Lewis, and that re-signing also comes with a signing bonus, the amount depending on how long he wants to re-sign for. So they put us on the Ft. Lewis 'waiting list' and told us they'd call us back in a couple days and tell us whether Ft. Lewis accepts us or not, and THAT'S when we'd do all of the re-signing paperwork and whatnot.
A few days later, they called back, and told us we GOT IT! So Matt made an appointment to do all of the re-signing paperwork and renew the Army Oath thingy on July 8th, and we'd move to Ft. Lewis in April 2009 when our 3 year tour of Hawaii is complete.

THEN we thought about STOP -LOSS!!!!!
The US Army Stop-Loss Policy is basically where they keep you wherever you are, longer than you're supposed to be, so that you'll deploy with your unit.
The NORMAL stop-loss time frame is 90 days prior to deployment, and the last I heard, he's not set to deploy until September 2009. Which would make us safe if we left in April 2009. But THEN I heard that they're making the stop-loss date January 1st 2009, and that they're deploying in June/July. But THAT'S just rumor right there. And in THAT case, even if he re-signed for Ft. Lewis, we'd have to stay here in Hawaii, while he deployed again, and after he gets home from Iraq, THEN we'd move to Ft. Lewis.

IF the January stop-loss thing is true, he can TRY to apply for EPCOT which would make it so that we could leave Hawaii by December, BEFORE the stop-loss takes effect. But they're turning everyone who applies for that down, so it's very unlikely. But still worth a shot nonetheless.

Sorry this is so complicated, BUT.....

If he IS going to get stop-lossed, then he's definitely not going to re-sign NOW!
He'll wait until he's in Iraq to re-sign, because then his bonus will be tax-free!

SO.....
He's going to talk to people on Monday and find out when the stop-loss date is, and THEN we'll be better able to make a decision.

Ok, so basically the bottom line is, these are our possibilities
  • A) He re-signs now, gets Ft. Lewis, and we move in April 2009
(unless he gets picked up for Warrant Officer Candidacy School, and in that case, we'd move to Ft. Rucker for 12 months and everything else would be null and void)
  • B) He gets stop-lossed and doesn't re-sign now, and waits until he's in Iraq to re-sign and then we move to Ft. Lewis after he comes back from Iraq.
(again...unless he gets picked up for WOC school between now and then)

So the rumor is kind of true, but there are just too many if's and's or but's to really be able to make a decision. We'll know more on Monday.

I declare this rumor officially SQUASHED!

DID YOUR HEAD JUST EXPLODE FROM ALL OF THAT INFORMATION?
    MINE DID!
